Switching to vaping may be something you're wanting to do yourself but not sure where to start. This is why we have written this guide as an introduction to vaping to anyone who is looking to embark on their own vaping journey.
We will explain everything you need to know about vaping and ensure that by the end of this, you will have an in depth knowledge about vaping and be able to make informed decisions on how to vape in 2024, and quit smoking for good!
Here we will break down the most vital cornerstones of vaping, from how to choose the right tech for the job, to finding the perfect e liquid for your needs:
There are so many different vape devices on the market today that choosing the right device for you can be a bit complicated, especially if you are new to vaping. We will explore this in more depth further on in this blog, but all you'll need is a basic vape starter kit for your first device.
The bigger devices that can produce plumes of thick vape clouds may look visually appealing, and while these do serve a purpose, they're not aimed at vapers who have recently stopped smoking and started vaping as this is a very different vape style as we explain below.
Despite the numerous designs available, all e-cigarettes work on a similar principle. A large battery heats a metal coil that is surrounded by an absorbent material (or wick) that is saturated in a substance known as e-liquid. This heat causes the e-liquid in the material to evaporate into a vapour that you then inhale.
The e-liquid and coil are stored in a clearomizer - or as it is more commonly known today, a tank - and this tank will constantly need topping up with e-liquid depending on how often you use the device.
Luckily, you don’t need to possess an in-depth knowledge of compatibility between these parts as many e-cigarettes are sold as a set. The only details you need to keep in mind are which coils you use (so you can order replacements), and which e-liquid you prefer.
While enthusiasts enjoy experimenting with different styles of vaping and different forms of e-liquid, if you want to learn how to vape then you can easily ignore this side of the culture, as 95% of vapers who use e-cigarettes do so with the sole purpose of giving up cigarettes, not as a hobby.
You have now established an understanding of the two different vaping styles, and should now be able to make an informative decision on what the best vape starter kit would be for you as someone who is new to vaping.
Having recently quit smoking, you'll want to replicate the same effects that smoking gave you, but with less harmful risks that are associated with smoking. Meaning you'll be wanting a vape kit which is capable of MTL vaping. But there are several different kits out on the market today which can do this, and we will explain them in depth below.
Pod Vape Kits - These vape kits have fast become the most popular device on the market and the preferred device of choice amongst vapers both new to vaping as well as more experienced vapers alike.
Most pod vapes have simplistic design features such as refillable vape pods, normally with the coils already preinstalled in them, meaning you just dispose of the whole pod once the coil is burnt out.
A lot of the pod vape starter kits do not have the more advanced features such as adjustable wattage to get your head around, instead the technology inside the vape device does all the work and has a set wattage output based on what coil is used inside the pod.
These devices are capable of mouth to lung vaping, and work well with 50/50 vape juice such as nicotine salts. We recommend either the Vaporesso Xros 3 or Argus P1 Pod vape as the perfect choice for beginners wanting to give vaping a try.
Vape Mods - These are devices which are larger than a standard pod vape kit, and are what more commonly associated with sub-ohm vaping. Mod is the name given to the vape device which normally has a large internal battery or some use external batteries to power the device. The vape tank then screws on the top of this and you can adjust the wattage to what is suitable for you.
We have some vape mods available in our vape kit selection on EDGE. The Innokin Coolfire Z60 or the Aspire Zelos 3 are great vape mod kits suitable for those with vaping experience who may be looking for a more advanced kit.
A lot of people who are wanting to give vaping a go have admitted to using a disposable vape to give it a try. Disposable vape usage amongst adults in the UK has sky-rocketed over the last few years and has very much been the "in thing" within the vaping community. This is because they offer a simple and easy route into vaping, being ready to use straight out of the packaging with no need to refill with e-liquids or change pods or coils etc.
However, it's not just adults that have been using disposable vapes, as alarming numbers of youths aged 11-17 year olds are frequently using the brightly coloured, rich tasting vaping devices which has ultimately turned the Prime Minister's hand to initiate a disposable vape ban in England.
This is in a bid to crack down on youth vaping numbers from rising any further, as well as protecting the environment from the harm that discarded disposables are causing, with millions entering landfill every week because they cannot be recycled, despite being made from plastic.
Whilst offering a convenient entry into vaping, they are not the most cost-effective way to vape, with the average disposable costing around £6 and these can only last a frequent vaper for one day, as they only contain a small charged lithium-ion battery and anywhere from 1.2ml to 2ml of e-liquid, which is not a lot when you think about it.
This is why we recommend skipping past disposables if you're about to start your vaping journey, or if you are a current disposable user, try and make the switch to a more cost-effective and sustainable way to vape such as a refillable pod system.
The Aspire R1 is the perfect alternative to disposable vapes if you want to vape but do not want to change coils or pods around. Whilst this device is disposable, it's rechargeable as well as refillable and it is then disposed of once the maximum charges or refill amounts has been reached.
Priced at only £6.99, this is penny's more than the cost of a disposable vape such as an Elf Bar, and you can reuse it multiple times, as well as being able to keep an eye on your vape juice levels as well as being able to top them out when you're running low.
The majority of vape kits which are designed and marketed as a 'beginner vape' would be the ideal kit to get you started on your vaping journey. We would recommend picking something simple like the pod devices that we mentioned as they are simply and easy to use without any complicated settings to get your head round which can be off putting for a new vaper.
One of the most frequently asked questions by new vapers is: ‘how do I inhale my vape properly?’. While it may seem simple, you might be surprised by just how tricky it can be to master the perfect inhale – that goes for experienced vapers as well as beginners, there’s never any harm in honing your vaping technique.
Ensuring you get as satisfying, smooth and tasty vaping experience depends on a few different factors, including personal preference! Remember that if it isn’t broken, you probably don’t need to fix it – if you are comfortable with your technique, then you don’t need to overcomplicate things.
If however you are struggling to inhale your vape without coughing, or if you simply want to study-up on the different techniques people use, then read on as we explain. While everyone will have a slightly different approach based on their taste, there are two well established techniques for inhaling a vape properly; MTL vaping, and DTL vaping - however there is also a newer style which has emerged off the back of disposable vaping called RDL.
MTL stands for mouth-to-lung. It is the inhale style most similar to smoking a cigarette and therefore is one of the easiest to learn as a new vaper.
Try to be gentle in your following of the above steps. If you used to smoke a cigarette, try to apply the same principals when MTL vaping, and you will be able to inhale vapour without coughing in no time.
DTL stands for direct-to-lung. This technique is a little harder to master, and is better suited to high power devices designed for thick HVG juice.
Just like MTL, don’t panic and inhale smoothly to avoid coughing. This technique is a little more specialised, and you can easily overwhelm yourself. Best practice is to slowly increase the length of your inhale and the amount of vapour you pull through until you get comfortable.
RDL stands for restricted-direct-lung. This technique is a relative newcomer to the vaping world and has been driven by the experience offered by disposable vapes like Elf Bar and Lost Mary.
Just like MTL, don’t panic and inhale smoothly to avoid coughing. This technique is a little more specialised but becomes more natural a lot faster than DTL. Best practice is to slowly increase the length of your inhale and the amount of vapour you pull through until you get comfortable, choocing an RDL pod/coil can help with this a lot.
Your chosen nicotine strength can play a major role in the ‘harshness’ of your inhale when vaping. Low strength products like 3mg or 6mg e-liquids are typically smoother, with 12mg and 18mg being incrementally harsher tasting respectively.
Make sure you factor this in when considering your needs as a vaper, having a smooth drag is important, but your vaping journey will fail if you are not getting enough nicotine to satisfy your cravings. This is where Nic Salts can be particularly useful.
One of the biggest differences when inhaling a vape is the temperature. Because vaping devices turn e-liquid into an aerosol by heating it up with a coil, it feels much cooler than hot cigarette smoke which burns at a much higher temperature.
For some, that heat plays a role in why they enjoy the act of smoking as it contributes to the sensation of having a ‘satisfying drag’. If you find your vape isn’t as ‘harsh’ as you’d like, increasing your nicotine strength can help recreate the sensation, albeit not the heat.
Take care not to go higher than what you are comfortable with, try to find a balance between the inhale experience you want and the craving satisfaction you need.
Your chosen device and e-liquid will make a big impact on the style that best suits you, but there are always exceptions to these guidelines, and it is entirely up to you to decide which technique you prefer - just be aware that straying too far outside of the norm when using either technique
The important thing to remember when starting out, is to adjust for the differences between vaping and smoking, and be prepared to explore your options to find the perfect balance to master inhaling your vapour.

"Vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking"
That's not our words, that's a quote from Public Health England made in 2015. And this is a stance which has remained the same after studies compared the harm risk levels between vaping and smoking in 2022 and found that in the short and medium term, vaping poses a small fraction of the risks of smoking.
The risks involved with smoking are incredibly high, mostly down to the large volume of toxic chemicals that are produced from tobacco when lit and are then harboured in the cigarette smoke which is inhaled and ingested into the body. High levels of toxic chemicals such as tar and carbon monoxide are present within cigarette smoke which are leading contributors to contracting deadly diseases such as cancer, heart disease and lung disease.
With vaping, you are not burning anything meaning no smoke is created unlike a cigarette. Instead, the coil of your vaping, which acts as the heating element, heats up your vape liquid and turns it into vapour for you to inhale and exhale.
There is a significantly lower risk of exposure to harmful substances from vaping compared with smoking. Whilst some of the chemicals used in tobacco and cigarette production are present in some vape juices, the amount that is present is so miniscule compared to the volume that is found in cigarettes and tobacco, it is not considered harmful to health.
Choosing to make the switch to vaping will benefit you so much in many different areas of your lifestyle. Obviously your health will be improved once you quit smoking, but also choosing to vape is a significant money saver compared to what the cost of smoking is today in the UK.
The average 20 a day smoker can expect to spend over £80 a week just on cigarettes which is a staggering amount, and this amount will increase with the continual tax increases that are put on tobacco products every year as part of the UK Budget.
Vaping will not cost you anywhere near this amount as a weekly total, even if you are a frequent vaper. Buying 4 bottles of our incredible Bar Salts nicotine salt e liquids for just £10 will provide you with a good amount of vape juice which should last at least a week if not longer, less than the price of a pack of 20 cigarettes and lasts 7 times longer!
When you're new to vaping, working out what nicotine strength can be one of the things about vaping that you find more complex at first glance, but that's what this vape guide is all about, to make things as easy as possible and for you to learn more about vaping as we explain different nicotine strengths below.
You will want to use a nicotine strength that is equivalent to the amount of cigarettes you'd previously smoked previously, for example:
It's crucial that you get the nicotine strength of your vape juice correct if you want to successfully transition away from smoking as the amount of nicotine in your vape juice should curb the cravings for nicotine and satisfy your urges so that you're not tempted to go back to smoking again.
Making the switch from smoking to vaping can seem a daunting task, but it's absolutely an achievable task providing you have the right tools at your disposal from the get go.
Choosing the best vape kit that is suited to your needs is essential, as well as finding an e-liquid with the correct nicotine strength is just as important. By having both of these things right makes vaping a walk in the park, alongside the right amount of will power and determination to quit smoking for good!
We've established an understanding about vape kits now and we now move onto delving into all about vape juices as there's different vape juices available from us here at EDGE vaping which accommodates to every vaping style that there is. The way you vape will determine which vape juice you have to use to ensure that you get the best experience of vaping possible.
If you're wanting to use pen style vape kits and get an authentic mouth to lung vaping experience, then there's two options available for you when it comes to e-liquids as we explain.
Freebase Nicotine E-Liquid - This is the original form of e-liquid which has been manufactured and used by vapers for over a decade since the inception of vaping. Using an equal 50/50 ratio of Vegetable Glycerine (VG) to Propylene Glycol (PG) combined with the freebase nicotine is what replicates the throat hit previously gotten from smoking cigarettes.
Nicotine Salt E-Liquid - This e-liquid differs from the above mentioned as it's made slightly differently to a standard vape juice. The way this is done is by adding a weakened acid to the nicotine and this then neutralises the pH levels of the nicotine which removes the normal harshness of the nicotine meaning a higher nicotine strength such as 20mg can be vaped without it stinging your throat.
The weak acid also enhances the flavour concentrates used in vape juice formulas, as well as helping the nicotine absorb into the bloodstream quicker, in a time that is very similar to what the nicotine from tobacco products absorbs in.
Opting to use nic salts as your first vape juice when moving onto vaping could be beneficial to helping you quit smoking easier, as you'll be curbing your cravings for nicotine faster thanks to the fast absorption time of the nicotine salts.
If you find nicotine salts are too overwhelming for you, then simply switch to using freebase nicotine vape juices instead, which will have a less intense nicotine hit. We would recommend grabbing yourself a bottle of each to try, as well as opting to use a vape kit like an MTL vape kit which is suitable for both of these types of e-liquids.
Finding a flavour of e-liquid that you really like is an essential part on your vaping journey, because if you find an e-liquid flavour that you like, then you're going to want to continue to vape it and not be tempted to revert back to smoking cigarettes.
Many people when surveyed have admitted that they quit smoking as they do not enjoy the taste of tobacco and want to get as far away from it as possible, which flavoured vape juice can help in doing just that! Although, tobacco flavour e-liquids are just as popular as they were during the evolving stages of vaping when the only options were tobacco or mint/menthol flavours.
Whereas now, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to picking a vape juice flavour as there's pretty much a flavour for everybody's liking, browse our incredible collection of flavoured vape juices now to find the perfect one for you!
While those new to vaping may feel overwhelmed or inundated with the sheer amount of information available, it’s not necessary to become an expert to start your vaping journey. Read on for our top tips for beginners, and how to fix some common vaping mistakes.
Choosing the right starter device for you is an important first step to building an affinity with your new vaping device. Poor quality, disposable e-cigarettes often use outdated technology and give an inferior quality of experience that could end up putting you off vaping for life.
Conversely, buying a sub-ohm box mod when you’re trying to make the initial switch from smoking could end up being an expensive and over-engineered device for your current needs.
Choosing a user-friendly device is crucial to setting yourself up for success. Consider the EDGE Hybrid, which has been designed with user friendly features such as e-liquid pods which are quick and simple to change and a familiar crush-ball menthol filter tip. Starting with the right nicotine level is a key consideration for those looking to make a successful switch from smoking to vaping, as it’s essential that you don’t start with too little, or too much nicotine. Edge’s selection of pods and free pour e-liquids range from 18 mg for heavy smokers down to 6mg for those looking to reduce their nicotine content, and 3mg.
A general estimation is that if you currently smoke 10 or more standard cigarettes a day, 18mg nicotine strength is probably the right choice for you. If you smoke 10 or fewer light variety cigarettes, you may find 12mg a better fit.
We also carry a full range of nic salts, which can be a useful option if you are finding higher strength nicotine too harsh as it can deliver a smoother vaping experience. Our pods and free pour e-liquids range right down to 3mg for those looking to reduce their nicotine content over time.
Choosing the right flavour may seem like a simple step, but to ensure that vape experiences remain a satisfactory smoking alternative, it’s important to pick the right flavour for you.
Edge’s range of e-liquid includes traditional menthol and tobacco flavours in both pods and e-liquids, as well as blackcurrant and an assortment of floral, fruity, and dessert vape juice flavours for those looking for variety in their experience.
PG/VG ratio simply refers to Proplylene Glycol, and Vegetable Glycerin, which make up the base of your e-liquids or pods. Both perform slightly different functions, with a higher PG liquid giving a satisfying throat hit much like tobacco cigarettes, while high VG liquids retain more moisture and produce larger clouds of vapour, perfect for sub-ohm vaping.
Any significant lifestyle change will be more difficult without planning or support. Doing the research first to make sure that you’re choosing the right device, nicotine strengths and buying enough refills, is a step you can easily take to manage your switch.
Feeling supported can also be a vital motivating factor so consider asking a trusted person to help keep you accountable. The wealth of information online regarding vaping can be confusing or overwhelming. While the unfamiliar can be scary, being informed is crucial when you’re making decisions which affect your lifestyle and health.
We’ve curated our vaping hub to help give simple and clear advice on how to start your vaping journey, as we believe that vaping should be easily accessible to anyone looking to make the switch.
It’s extremely important to remember to always, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the correct charging cable and USB/plug socket when charging your e-cigarette; failing to do so could result in your device overheating which could create a fire risk or short the device’s battery if it lacks the proper safety controls.
Originally, the majority of electronic cigarettes were either entirely disposable or had to be manually re-filled which we refer to as being an open tank system. Our streamlined pod systems, available with GO and Hybrid models, can be swapped out with remarkable ease, making any drips, slips, or spills a thing of the past. Even our free pour device, the Edge PRO, has an external filling port, meaning that you never even have to open your tank to effortlessly fill your vape.
Changing the coil on your new vaping device may seem daunting which is why our patented coil systems use innovative design solutions to quell any worries you might have.
Our Hybrid and GO models contain a coil in each pod, so you never have to worry about priming your coil or getting dry burn - you’ll automatically change the coil each time you change out your pod.
The EDGE PRO, which does require the coil to be changed has a unique patented coil system that makes coil changes simpler than ever before. Read more about coil changing.
This is an issue that affects most first-time e-cigarette users. Exposing your vape to extremely hot or cold conditions or climates can affect the life of the product.
Alternative vaping device brands require a user to remember to keep your vaporizer in the ‘off’ position when storing between uses.
Fortunately EDGE devices are streamlined and buttonless in order to eliminate accidental activation of the device in a pocket or bag, meaning no more leaks. Always store your vape in a safe, dry place when out of use.
We strive to ensure that our device batteries give long use between charging so you’re never without your vape when it’s needed.
Starter kits like our pod-based GO model have a new and improved 450mAh built-in battery offering up to 30% more battery life than previous models, meaning the hard decisions are already made for you! Shop the GO!
Unsurprisingly, coil concerns feature twice on this list of common mistakes, as coils can be a technical part of the device that users don’t fully understand before purchasing a device.
Priming may seem like an unexpected additional step in the coil change process, but rest assured, it is extremely simple. When you change a coil you should always allow it to prime, which refers to letting the internal wicking material in the coil absorb the e-liquid for at least 5-10 minutes before using it in order to prevent a dry hit that can hurt your throat.
In order to stick to your vaping routine make sure that you don’t get caught out without refills. For free pour devices, stock up on your favourite bottled flavours regularly. EDGE Hybrid pods are sold in packs of up to 5 and EDGE GO pods are sold in packs of 2 in order to make sure that you’re stocked up and prepared for success.
While vaping produces less waste products than smoking, it’s important to always dispose of your filter tips and pods safely, and, as with smoking, refrain from doing so in situations and places that could be considered an annoyance or offense.
If you are considering vaping for the first time but want to make sure you start your journey in the right way, follow the advice above or check out our guide, How to Vape Properly to learn everything you need to know to get going in one easy place.

]]>Shortfills are large volume bottles of high-VG e-liquid, only ever sold in 0mg – without nicotine. The idea is for the vaper to create a nicotine strength that suits them, using nic shots. While this may sound a little complicated to some, for many it is the best way to vape – check out the guide below and decide for yourself.
Before we get into how to use short fills, it’s worth ensuring you understand the ingredients that go into them, you can find out more in our guide, but we will cover the basics here.
What Ingredients are in a Shortfill?
E-liquid typically contains four primary ingredients: PG, VG, nicotine & flavouring.
Vapers using the higher-powered sub-ohm devices needed to make the most of high-VG e-liquid often find that they get through their juice very quickly when compared to smaller devices, often buring through many 10ml bottles in quick succession.
TPD regulations however meant producing a larger bottle of e-liquid to help people not carry so many small ones would be tricky, in that it would not be able to contain any nicotine. This is why legal shortfills will always be 0mg.
But how then does a vaper add nicotine to a shortfill? That is where nic shots come in!
Nic shots only exist because of shortfills. They are never intended to be vaped on their own, and with no flavour and high nicotine content that is for good reason!
You can learn more about nic salts, nic shots, shortfills and other e-liquids in our blog, How to Vape Properly
How To Mix Shortfill E-Liquid
Please note because of the differences between different shots, you should always note:
Shortfill Mixing Guide
Our EDGE BASE shortfills and nic shots have been designed to work perfectly together, the shortfills are filled to 50ml, in a 75ml bottle. They are both 80VG/20PG and are dosed to allow easy strength creation without complicated maths! See our guide below:
1 x 50ml HVG 0mg Base Shortfill + 1 x 10ml 18mg HVG nic shot = 60ml of 3mg HVG vape juice
1 x 50ml HVG 0mg Base Shortfill + 2 x 10ml 18mg HVG nic shot = 70ml of 6mg HVG vape juice
Even when adding 2 x nic shots, there will always be 5ml of headspace to allow for steeping after your shots are added.
While there are many different brands and models you can choose from, the most important thing as a shortfill user is to ensure you use a sub-ohm vaping device. this means it will use a coil rated at below 1ohm (a unit of electrical resistance).
This low ohm rating means the coil has a higher resistance, and can take a lot more power through it – this generates more heat but also means you can vaporise thick high-VG juice like a shortfill.
There are a few different types of sub-ohm device available to try, but these are the main types to look out for if you don’t want to get into the hobbyist world or rebuildable coils:

]]>However, vaping does not fall under smoke-free legislation. An independent review of Public Health England’s 2014 independent evidence review confirmed the findings that there is no evidence of harm to bystanders from the inhalation of vaping vapour, and the risks associated with inhaling secondhand vapour are likely to be exceedingly low.
There is currently no law to prohibit the use of vape devices in public or indoor spaces in the UK. Instead, the banning of vaping falls on the owner of the facilities to impose their own restrictions.
This means that, by law, there is no ban on vaping indoors. However, in practice, there are few day-to-day facilities that allow its use. Therefore, it is vital that you undertake research of the venue before vaping, or ask an appropriate member of staff if it is permissible. It should also be considered that the type of device you are using can make a big difference – larger mods with high power for sub-ohm vaping produce far bigger clouds, and will almost always be inappropriate to use indoors anywhere that isn’t your own property – smaller devices that produce less vapour like the EDGE GO or Pro are generally more discreet.
Updates to policy-making in the UK are pending review, and based on a number of new initiatives, such as making a clear distinction between vaping and smoking. Furthermore, policies on vaping are building upon the knowledge and efficacy of cigarette bans, and the distinction between the effects of e-cigarette vapour and cigarette smoke are foundations for the banning - or lack thereof - of vaping indoors.
The blanket rule is that vaping in public spaces is allowed. However, as you will see below, in practice there are few private facilities where vaping is permitted.
Unlike smoking, there is no comprehensive ban on vaping in pubs and restaurants. However, many of the UK’s most popular chain restaurants have banned vaping use indoors. You should therefore check with the premises whether vaping is allowed, or if there is a designated vaping area.
A consideration for policy development put forward by Public Health England in 2016 was that it is never acceptable to require vapers to share the same outdoor space with smokers. As such, be it in pub gardens or at the workplace, where there is a designated smoking area, vapers should be permitted to vape elsewhere.
Under current law, vaping on a train is not illegal. However, most train companies have banned it. Prior to 2015, it was permissible to vape on a number of train lines and on train platforms - but bans have accumulated across the country, meaning that there are now no train companies that allow it. You should always check with the train line before attempting to vape, and with the operating train platform to see if it is allowed in the vicinity of the train platform.
Similarly, most bus and coach operators have banned vaping on their transport services - but not all - so check on the company’s website or with a member of staff before using your vape onboard.
You are also allowed to vape while driving, as long as the vapour you create does not hamper your visibility of the road. If it is found that you used your vape in a manner that impaired your vision, you may be penalised for not being in control of your vehicle. Such penalisations could lead to a £2,500 fine and nine points on your licence. If you want to vape inside your vehicle, you should open your window or use a vape device that produces less vapour.
There are some facilities that have outright banned vaping; all UK airports do not allow its use indoors or on planes. If you are looking to vape, you will need to do so outdoors, in the same designated area as smoking. Unfortunately, there is currently little done to accommodate vapers in a segregated area to smokers - but some places have made strives to do so. Heathrow airport, for example, has a designated vaping lounge in Terminal 4.
As above, the law says that you can vape in public spaces, but it is up to the discretion of the facilities to impose bans. As such, you will find that you will generally not be allowed to vape in:

]]>Since then, devices have tended to become larger for more e-liquid capacity and in order to host bigger batteries with longer life as well as the range of flavours which we know and enjoy has rapidly expanded.
At EDGE, we’re constantly adapting to consumer needs to perfect the UK’s number one vaping device brand and build our range of award-winning e-liquids.
Despite many innovations, the fundamental way that vaping devices work hasn’t changed much, operating by using power from a battery to atomise e-liquid into vapour.
All vaping devices house a battery which powers the internal vapourising process. Generally the batteries used in a vape are rechargeable lithium ion batteries which are charged from the base of the device using a USB charging cable. EDGE vaping devices use batteries with a robust mAh, for powerful all-day vaping.
Vaping devices run on e-liquid, sometimes referred to as vape juice. This is what is atomised into the vapour which is inhaled and exhaled from the device mouthpiece.
E-liquids are made up of a handful of key ingredients, including nicotine. The strength of the nicotine in the e-liquid is often variable, allowing for users to decide the right strength for themselves. To read more about what goes into an EDGE e-liquid, read more here.
The vaping device you use will determine how the e-liquid should be topped up. Free-pour e-liquids, like those used with the EDGE PRO, are purchased in bottles and poured directly into an open tank inside the device.
Devices that run on pods or cartridges such as the EDGE GO or HYBRID run on replaceable pods which contain the e-liquid and click into the device.
The process of transforming e-liquid into vapour is known as atomisation. The liquid is atomised into a cloud of tiny particles by wicking the e-liquid into an internal heating element made of tightly wound conductive metal known as a coil.
The battery current passed through the coil powers heats the coil up and allows the user to draw vapour from the mouthpiece.
For users of pod or cartridge-based devices such as the EDGE GO or EDGE HYBRID, the coil is housed internally within the replaceable e-liquid pods and so is changed with every new pod.
For users of free-pour devices such as the EDGE PRO the coil will need to be changed as it has a natural lifespan. Read more about coils and how to change them here.

The PRO is a free-pour device which is topped up by pouring e-liquid through an external refill port straight into the device tank. The key benefit of free-pour refill is that you can explore our wide range of award-winning bottled flavours.
As well as keeping your tastebuds satisfied, our bottled blends outstrip even the GO in cost per ml, giving you maximum flavour with maximum savings.
]]>The GO is a great device for new vapers because of its simple to use pod system and compact, discrete design. GO pods are available in 18, 12 and 6mg/ml nicotine strengths.
The best e-liquid strength to use when first switching from cigarettes to vaping is 18mg/ml. Starting out with the highest nicotine strength e-liquid helps to combat cravings and makes the switch to vaping easier. It is advisable to use 18mg/ml e-liquids for at least a month to support a successful adjustment to vaping.
After this point, individuals who want to decrease their nicotine intake can make the step down to 12mg/ml followed by 6mg/ml. Vapers who want to cut out nicotine completely can switch to the PRO once they are more confident with vaping and step down to e-liquids with 0mg/ml nicotine.
The best flavour e-liquid to use with the GO really depends on individual taste. That being said, using familiar flavours when making the switch from cigarettes to vaping can help reduce cravings and replace a smoking habit. Our British Tobacco, USA Blend and Very Menthol GO pods are the closest flavours to cigarettes and will therefore be most familiar to smokers.
British Tobacco is based on a true tobacco flavour, while our USA Blend is closer to an American Lite cigarette with a more mellow, roasted flavour profile. Very Menthol is a good choice for smokers who enjoyed dual or menthol cigarettes, as it subtly blends the classic coolness of menthol with the crispness of peppermint.
When users are more comfortable with vaping, exploring other flavours can help dissociate the vaping habit from smoking. Blackcurrant, Forest Fruits and Mango Ice Menthol GO pods are great fruity flavours to try.
]]>The EDGE GO is a disposable pod device that is compact, simple to use and a perfect first step into vaping. The GO uses pods that come prefilled with e-liquids and have coils and mouthpieces built-in. With no need to manually refill e-liquids or change fiddly coils, GO pods simply click in and out for an easy and satisfying vaping experience. The GO is perfect for vapers who want a straight-forward, economical device to start them on their vaping journey.
The EDGE PRO is an innovative, all-in-one vaping device. Perfect for use with our wide range of free-pour e-liquids, the PRO is designed to be user-friendly, practical and efficient. The coil features patented Rapid Release technology and a built-in mouthpiece, making coil changes quick, simple and hygienic. EDGE Clearomisers are a good introduction to vaping an e-cigarette with a refillable tank. Clearomisers feature a mouthpiece, coil and clear tank with wick, so it’s easy to see the e-liquid level inside. The tank can be refilled with any EDGE free-pour e-liquid, but the Clearomiser coil cannot be replaced, so the device should be disposed of once the coil starts performing less efficiently. Clearomisers are great for vapers who want an economical way to try more free-pour e-liquid flavours. Vapers who enjoy using Clearomisers can move on to the PRO for a longer-lasting device.
EDGE Cartomisers are a good first step into vaping. These small and straightforward e-cigarettes come prefilled with flavours, so there’s no need to use e-liquids. Cartomisers simply screw onto the corresponding battery and work with an inhale. Because they look the most like cigarettes, Cartomisers can be familiar and appealing to vapers trying to quit smoking. Cartomisers are a good choice for new vapers who want an economical and easy way to try vaping. Once they are more comfortable with vaping, users can move onto the GO to try other flavours and enjoy a more permanent device.
]]>The PRO is a device that is ideal for individuals who have tried vaping before or are confident with the GO or HYBRID. The PRO has a refillable tank that can be filled with any EDGE e-liquid and an innovative combination coil and mouthpiece that makes switching the coil easier and more hygienic.
The best e-liquid strength to use when first switching from cigarettes to vaping is 18mg/ml. Starting out with the highest nicotine strength e-liquid helps make the switch to vaping easier. It is advisable to use 18mg/ml e-liquids for at least a month to support a successful adjustment to vaping.
After this point, individuals who want to decrease their nicotine intake can make the step down to 12mg/ml e-liquids, followed by 6mg/ml and even as low as 3mg/ml. Stepping down nicotine intake gradually helps reduce cravings and makes the final step to 0mg/ml easier for vapers who want to cut out nicotine completely.
The best flavour e-liquid to use with the PRO really depends on individual taste. That being said, using e-liquids that taste similar to cigarettes can help make vaping feel more familiar.
EDGE British Tobacco provides a traditional tobacco taste, while the Virginia Tobacco e-liquid offers a flavour closer to rolling tobacco. For smokers who enjoyed dual or menthol cigarettes, Very Menthol is a good choice, as it subtly blends the classic coolness of mint with the crispness of peppermint.
When users are more comfortable with vaping, exploring other flavours can help dissociate the vaping habit from smoking. With EDGE and EDGE Elite free-pour e-liquids, there’s a wide variety of fruit, menthol and sweet-based flavours to enjoy exploring.
Clearomisers are a useful device for users who want to try experimenting with free-pour flavours, but are not yet confident enough with vaping to commit to the PRO.
A Clearomiser has a refillable tank and uses free-pour e-liquids, but does not include a replaceable coil as the PRO does, which means the whole Clearomiser is replaced when the coil needs to be changed.
Clearomisers are great for trying free-pour e-liquids before moving on to the more permanent vaping solution of the PRO.
]]>The HYBRID is a great device for new vapers because of its straightforward pod system and compact, professional design. HYBRID pods are available in 18 and 12mg/ml nicotine strengths. After this point, individuals who want to decrease their nicotine intake can make the step down to 12mg/ml. Vapers who want to decrease their nicotine intake further can switch to the compact and easy to use GO to enjoy 6mg/ml pods. Alternatively, users who feel confident with using free-pour e-liquids can switch to the PRO to decrease nicotine levels further or cut out nicotine completely.
The best flavour e-liquid to use with the HYBRID really depends on individual taste. That being said, using e-liquids that taste similar to cigarettes can help make vaping feel more familiar. The three HYBRID flavours are designed with this in mind. The HYBRID British Tobacco is a honeyed blend of light and dark tobacco notes, while the HYBRID Very Menthol mixes the classic coolness of menthol with the crispness of peppermint for a taste that will appeal to smokers who enjoyed dual or menthol cigarettes. As the third HYBRID flavour, Blackcurrant provides a sweet and fruity option for individuals who are more comfortable with vaping and want to start exploring flavours to dissociate their vaping habit from smoking.
]]>With a classic look, portable design and seamless pod switching, vaping couldn’t be easier with the GO.
Designed with simplicity in mind, the pod-based e-liquids are easy to switch. No fuss or mess when changing pods. Choose from 6 core pods in our best-selling flavours. Small, sleek and ergonomic: it’s a comfortable fit for the hand and the pocket.
The range caters to the popular cigarette flavours with favourites such as British Tobacco, American Tobacco and Menthol which all deliver a remarkably similar flavour experience in order to help make the switch from tobacco easier for quitters. The range also includes our best-selling fruit based flavours which deliver intense depth of flavour, including Blackcurrant, Forest Fruits and Mango Ice Menthol.
Pods come in 3 strengths of 6mg, 12mg & 18mg. The GO pod range has been curated to deliver a range of nicotine intensities. Users typically find it helpful to start vaping at a higher nicotine strength in response to cravings and then drop down in strength when they are more used to vaping or if they wish to reduce their nicotine content.
The body of the vaping device holds the battery. This attaches to the pod which also contains the mouthpiece and inside, the coil (which transforms the liquid into vapour). Once the device is charged, simply draw from the mouthpiece to start vaping. To change the pod just lift the mouthpiece directly up to release the empty pod and slide the new one down into its place. Magnets inside the device assist in guiding the pod into place, making refilling quick and intuitive.
The GO is a true crowd-pleaser. Its ease of use makes it ideal for new quitters who want to start vaping straight away or anyone looking for a simple pod-based device in classic flavours. Devices running on pods and cartridges are an increasingly popular choice with vapers both new and established because of the simplicity of use.
]]>
Research indicated 37% of smokers who have tried vaping as a means to quitting were put off by the hard, unfamiliar mouthpiece. The HYBRID is a world first, incorporating an ultra-fine, microfibre filter tip with an optional menthol crushball into a vaping device. Powered by an 830mAh battery, the device can effortlessly power all-day vaping. The soft-touch exterior of the device and perfectly balanced weight makes holding the device ergonomic and instantly comfortable, even to a totally new user. The HYBRID starter packs help make the experience of starting even easier by incorporating everything you need to get started. The leak-free pod system makes pods simple and fuss-free to replace.
One device, 3 big flavours. The HYBRID pods available were chosen to introduce new vapers to key flavours which blend well with the menthol crushball and the starter pack contains one of each. British Tobacco is our best-seller which delivers a remarkably smooth and satisfying flavour experience. Very Menthol delivers a punchy menthol hit which can be maximised with the menthol crushball. Blackcurrant brings intense fruitiness and introduces new users to a flavour they won’t have experienced in cigarettes.
Designed for new quitters, pods come in two strengths: 12mg and 18mg. To give new quitters the best chance of a smooth transition from smoking to vaping, the starter kit contains 18mg nicotine pods which is a high strength option. Pods are available to repurchase at 12mg and 18mg.
The dynamic body of the device holds the battery and is charged from the base. The whole device splits into two halves in order to simply click in the e-liquid pod. The two halves come back together with magnetics in the casing to help guide reattachment. Filter tips are then inserted into the top of the mouthpiece. From there, draw from the filter to start vaping. Hybrid pods are expected to last an average of 24 hours for a new user and are available to repurchase in packs of one or five pods.
The HYBRID was designed with new quitters in mind and many of the features of the HYBRID will appeal directly to smokers looking to make their transition from smoking to vaping as successful as possible. However, the smoothness of the draw through a filter is a premium experience that gives the HYBRID appeal to new and existing vapers.
]]>The sleek and minimal design of the PRO is manufactured using robust metal casing to stand the test of time while looking good. One notorious drawback of free-pour vaping (i.e. pouring e-liquid directly into an open tank device instead using pods or cartridges) is having to change the coil, which is the component that heats and vapourises the e-liquid. This messy and fiddly task has been completely simplified with the PRO’s patented Rapid Release Coil. The twist and pull action to release the spent coil makes coil changes fast and mess-free.
There really is something for everyone in the extensive range of EDGE free-pour flavours available for the PRO. The EDGE Core range delivers the classic flavours you’d expect to find in any vape store, such as Menthol, British Tobacco and Blackcurrant. Our EDGE Nic Salts are a brilliant option for users looking for a high strength e-liquid without compromising on delicious flavour. The EDGE Elite range brings an exciting selection of premium flavours from sweets through to fruits. If it tickles your fancy, increase your vapour cloud size with the EDGE Max range. Finally, for the seasoned vaper looking to mix their own freebase blends, explore our EDGE Base range.
The EDGE free-pour liquids compatible with the PRO are available in a wide range of nicotine strengths. The majority of flavours come in a range of 3mg, 6mg, 12mg & 18mg. This is to give high strength e-liquids to those who need them, such as new cigarette quitters, as well as giving the option to step nicotine content down to a minimal 3mg, or even in some cases nicotine free.
The body of the vaping device houses the e-liquid tank and the battery, so charges from the bottom. At the top, an external filling port allows you to refill your tank with free-pour liquids without having to open the tank itself, like many other similar devices. This eliminates leaking and makes refilling quick and mess-free. The PRO’s revolutionary Rapid Release Coil fits into the top of the device and is removed with a simple twist and lift action whenever the coil needs to be changed. The all-in-one construction of the coil housing also provides a fresh built-in mouthpiece whenever the coil is changed for good device hygiene.
The EDGE PRO makes an ideal next step for pod users who are looking to explore the extensive range of free-pour flavours available to the PRO to keep their vaping journey exciting. This also represents the best value option so can be a savvy decision for those looking to increase their savings on e-liquids. The patented Rapid Release Coil system can also be a significant innovation to existing vapers looking for a device which makes changing coils fast and neat.
]]>The presence of the addictive stimulant nicotine in e-liquids and cigarettes is the most notable similarity between vaping and smoking. Nicotine from cigarettes is inhaled in tobacco smoke which exposes users to high levels of harmful chemicals and is supplied in a fixed level that gives users little control over their intake. E-liquids contain small amounts of chemicals alongside closely controlled levels of nicotine. At EDGE our e-liquids range from 18mg to 0mg of nicotine available in free-pour for the EDGE PRO. The different levels of nicotine give users more individual control over their usage and provide an option to reduce intake for those who want to.
Alongside the presence of nicotine, vaping and smoking share the physical similarities of exhaled clouds of smoke or vapour and hand-to-mouth action. These similarities can make e-cigarettes familiar and accessible as an alternative to smoking. When added to the differences between smoking and vaping, they make e-cigarettes an appealing method for those looking to live a smoke-free life.
Burning tobacco produces over 5000 chemicals along with nicotine. The most dangerous of these are carbon monoxide and tar, but others include arsenic, formaldehyde and radioactive chemicals such as uranium. The WHO has stated that smoking is the single most preventable cause of disease, disability and death around the world. However, there is evidence that these health risks start to decrease within just two days of stopping smoking, and continue to do so the longer ex-smokers remain on their smoke-free journey.
Many of the high-risk chemicals found in cigarette smoke are created specifically by the burning of tobacco, which is why e-cigarettes use a heated coil to vaporise e-liquids instead. At EDGE our mission is to make the safest and most consistent e-liquids in the world while upholding high levels of transparency. Making our e-liquids from a simple blend of four, high-quality key ingredients* with no artificial colourings or unnecessary chemicals, is just one step in our process. We also batch test our e-liquids and have gone beyond industry standards by carrying out an independent review of the presence of potentially harmful chemicals in our e-liquids. Our results demonstrated formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein and crotonaldehyde were either absent or at considerably lower levels than would be found from smoking just one cigarette. Other harmful chemicals associated with cigarette smoke were undetectable.

]]>A typical EDGE e-liquid is made from roughly 50% Propylene Glycol (PG). This colourless, odourless and tasteless liquid is a perfect carrier agent. Nicotine and Flavourings are suspended in Propylene Glycol because its unique properties help the ingredients blend into a uniform solution and provide users with a consistent vaping experience.
The rest of a typical EDGE e-liquid is made from Vegetable Glycerol (VG). Another colourless liquid, VG is much thicker than PG and is included in vape liquids to create the vapour clouds. Vapers who enjoy creating large clouds often favour High Vegetable Glycerol (HVG) e-liquids. EDGE HVG vape juices are carefully blended for an 80% VG ratio coupled with uncompromising flavours.
Both PG and VG are versatile substances widely used in food and medical products and are regarded as safe by US and European standards agencies. At EDGE we source our PG and VG from trusted suppliers within the UK.
Nicotine is the active ingredient in vape juices. Our Swiss Nicotine is suspended in PG so that users receive an even dose every time they vape. This also gives EDGE control over the Nicotine concentration in our e-liquids. While this can lead to slight variations in the 50:50 ratio of PG and VG in our standard e-liquids, it also lets us create vape liquid blends with strengths between 18mg and 0mg. This gives vapers an option to step-down their nicotine intake gradually if they want to.
Finally, e-liquid Flavourings make the vaping journey more individual and enjoyable. Highly concentrated ingredients are carefully selected and suspended in, or combined with, PG to create the best possible flavour experience in every e-liquid. All of EDGE’s food-grade Flavourings are sourced from the UK with full traceability and are subject to internal auditing and quality checks as well as those carried out by our suppliers.
Whether you’re buying free-pour e-liquids for your PRO or pods for your GO, you can rely on all EDGE e-liquids to be a perfect blend of these four main ingredients* with no artificial colourings or unnecessary chemicals. Our commitment to safety and quality is present in everything we create and this has been recognised in the awards our e-liquids have won. We source all our ingredients from trusted suppliers who are thoroughly audited, including on-site visits, and test them with our own internal quality systems as well. We only accept ingredients that allow us to continue our mission of making the safest e-liquids in the world.
* Individual ingredients in flavourings may vary
]]>E-liquid typically contains 4 primary ingredients: PG, VG, nicotine & flavouring:
Propylene Glycol (PG)Vegetable Glycerol (VG)
VG is a naturally occurring chemical which is extracted from vegetable oils and stands for Vegetable Glycerine, and often produces larger vapour clouds as well as adding a slightly sweeter taste to your e-liquid. VG is a much preferred for sub-ohm vaping, offering a thicker feeling to vaping.
PG is a by-product of petroleum and stands for propylene glycol. With a lower viscosity than VG, you will find that the throat hit is much harsher than VG and will in turn give you a cigarette-like experience.
If you’re used to vaping and have been doing it for some time then VG may be for you. If you are a beginner in the world of vaping, high VG probably isn’t the obvious place to start. As mentioned, PG is a lot less viscous than VG and in turn, means that it can work more effectively on a beginner’s atomizer.
If you’re looking for a smooth throat hit as opposed to a harsh one, high VG is something that you should be looking into. However, although PG better simulates the feeling of smoking, you will find that the longer you have been on the vaping scene, the desire to smoke becomes less. This therefore opens the opportunity to move to high VG once those cravings have dissipated. So, it really depends on how important a throat hit is to you. If you’re looking for a more harsh throat hit then you should be looking at PG as opposed to VG.
VG has a naturally sweeter flavour than PG, however, PG is better for retaining the flavours added and it is this reason that food flavourings are often added to the mixture. Due to high VG obtaining a sweetness to its flavour, it can often become overwhelming if you’re wanting more savoury flavours and in this instance you want to be looking at a low VG.
For a lot of people who have been vaping over a long period of time, the vapour output created is an important aspect that needs to be considered. VG is renowned for its thicker consistency than PG, meaning that it is often a better choice for producing vast vapour clouds. If you are someone who is wanting to enter competitions or experiment with different tricks, high VG will work best for this.
As previously mentioned, high VG is renowned for having a much higher viscosity than PG and it will therefore make a difference when it comes to what type of atomiser you have. The intricacies of the atomiser involves heating the coil in order to vaporise the vape juice within the wick and with a high VG e-liquid, you will find that the wick is unable to soak it up as fast.
In turn, this can result in the vaping experience becoming a lot more dry and spoiling the sensation.
If you’re wanting to use high VG e-liquid without the added problems of dryness then it is recommended that you use sub-ohm tanks– these are, however, more catered to experienced vapers. We hope that this blog has offered some insightful information so that you can make the decision whether or not you think that high VG is for you. Here at Edge, we are proud to stock an extensive selection of e-liquids that come in a whole host of stunning flavours, so that you can find the perfect vape juice for you.
If you're thinking about quitting cigarettes for good, VApril is the perfect time to do it. We're kicking off VApril 2020 with an amazing deal - Our EDGE GO Device plus any 3 packs of pods for £10.
VApril is all about celebrating the benefits of kicking the cigarettes and making the switch to a healthier alternative, and we think the EDGE GO is one of the best ways to do it.
But what if you've never vaped before? What do you need to know if you're thinking about moving across to vaping? Here are some things you might want to think about.
The e-liquid and coil are stored in the tank, clearomiser, or in the case of the EDGE GO, the pod. Tanks will need topping up with e-liquid depending on how often you use the device.
Luckily, you don’t need to possess an in-depth knowledge of compatibility between these parts as many e-cigarettes are sold as a set. The only details you need to keep in mind are which coils you use (so you can order replacements), and which e-liquid you prefer.
While enthusiasts enjoy experimenting with different styles of vaping and different forms of e-liquid, if you just want a reliable nicotine alternative, then you can easily ignore this side of the vaping culture. Most vapers who use e-cigarettes do so with the sole purpose of avoiding cigarettes, not as a hobby.
When your kit arrives, it will most likely be pre-assembled, as in the case of the EDGE Pro device.
If you have a device with a tank, ensure that the coil is inserted into the tank as per the instructions, and then screw the tank into the battery. Do not, however, use the device with an empty tank as this will cause the absorbent wick to burn and the coil will need to be replaced.
Next, you need to prime the new coil. Simply put a few droplets of e-liquid onto the wick to help the absorption process. After a moment or two, you can fill the tank to its natural capacity with e-liquid. Before you turn the device on, it's a good idea to wait 5-10 mins to allow the wick to become saturated with e-liquid.
Remember, in the case of the EDGE GO, you don't need to do any of this at all. Simply pop your pod into the battery, and vape.
Some ex-smokers find their first use of an e-cigarette to be an odd experience, but gladly become accustomed to it in a very short space of time.
Some batteries have the ability to vary the voltage output, and those that find their first ‘hit’ a little strong can always turn the voltage down. However, the manual for your e-cigarette is likely to have an ‘ideal’ range for your coil, so it’s a great idea to start by choosing a mid-level setting based on the information provided.
When you’re ready, you can learn how to vape by simply following these simple instructions:
Repeat the process several times, then if you feel comfortable doing so, hold the power button down for longer while you inhale. After a few minutes, you’ll most likely find your preferred comfort zone.
Turning the voltage up will increase the speed that the coil heats the e-liquid, as well as producing a harsher ‘throat hit’ – so depending on your preference, adjust this setting appropriately.
There is no blanket set of rules for a vaper to follow, and the more you use the device, the more confident you will become tweaking the different settings such as voltage and airflow. Just remember that once you find the sweet spot you desire, you can begin looking at different styles and flavours of e-liquid, and after a while, you will find e-cigarettes can be a perfect replacement for smoking, and help you leave behind the health dangers that your old habit posed.
Whether you take us up on our EDGE GO Bundle, or you'd like to try the EDGE Pro as your device of choice, both will help you enormously when moving away from cigarettes completely.

]]>We want our EDGE customers to be well informed on their vaping journeys, knowledge is power after all! With that in mind, we have gathered below some of the key facts, to help you debunk the myths and make an informed decision about whether vaping is right for you.
We've put together some key facts around vaping, and hope it helps you come to a better understanding of the news stories and potential risks associated with vaping.
Of course, as soon as a new technology arrives, it’s only a matter of time before people with a flair for the dramatic begin to modify it. And it was this community of garden-shed geniuses that gave the world sub-ohm vaping.
Whether it’s on the internet, or even on the street where you live, you have probably seen someone using an e-cigarette producing unreasonably huge plumes of vapour and wondered to yourself how they do it. Well, the secret is sub-ohm vaping. But why would you want to do that? Well, other than wanting to show-off of course.
To put it bluntly, sub-ohm vaping uses an extra hot coil to vapourise a greater amount of e-liquid than a normal e-cigarette, producing big clouds (which enthusiasts love), while simultaneously producing a more intense flavour, and warmer vapour.
To be blunt, there’s no real need to try it if you’re happy with your current vaping experience. But if you fancy experimenting, there’s no harm in giving it a try. Until a few years ago, you would have to build your own sub-ohm mod – and depending on your electrical skill-set, this could end very badly. Thankfully, most e-cigarette manufacturers now produce their own factory-made sub-ohm kits which achieve the same results, without the risk of the device blowing up in your face. So, if you’ve got the spare cash, why not give it a go?
To understand the question, “what is sub-ohm vaping?”, you first need to understand the basics of how an electric circuit works in regard to potential difference (voltage), current (amps), and resistance (ohms) – this is known as Ohm’s Law, named after the German physicist who discovered it, Georg Simon Ohm.
When electricity is passed through a circuit that is connected to a power source, the amount of power that can be passed through the circuit is limited by two factors, the voltage (or battery power), and the resistance of the material from which the circuit is made. The flow of electricity through this circuit is called the current.
If we increase the power of the battery, the current will increase. If we increase the resistance of the circuit, the current will decrease.
In an e-cigarette, the heat produced by the coil dictates how much e-liquid can be vapourised, and the heat of the coil is dictated by the amount of current passing through it. To produce a huge cloud, you want to get the coil as hot as possible, but due to the resistance of the material (measured in ohms) from which the coil is made, a standard coil will simply melt and become unusable. The standard resistance across an e-cigarettes’ electrical circuit is between 1.5 to 2.8 ohms.
So how do you increase the current without the coil melting? All you need to do is reduce the resistance of the coil, and the easiest way to do this is by making the coil itself thicker. Think of the number of cars (current) that can travel down a motorway as opposed to a single country lane in any given time period – the extra lanes provide more space for a greater amount of traffic.
So, in conclusion, using a higher voltage from a larger battery, combined with a thicker coil that possesses a lower resistance (less ohms), you can vapourise much more e-liquid than you could with a lower-voltage standard battery using a thinner coil with a high resistance (more ohms) in the same time frame.
Hence why ‘sub-ohm vaping’ refers to any coil with a resistance of less than one ohm.
The greatest issue facing those that enjoy sub-ohm vaping is that it requires more expensive coils, uses a lot more e-liquid, and uses up your battery power much faster. However, thanks to the low prices of e-liquid, and the number of high capacity batteries available on the market, these issues are less of a problem today than they were five years ago. So next time someone asks you “what is sub-ohm vaping?”, whether or not you wish to give it a try you will, at least, know what they’re talking about.
Have a browse through our vape starter kits or e-liquid and make the transition to e-cigarettes today.
]]>In simple terms, an electronic cigarette is simply a device for changing the physical state of e-liquid into a gas by evaporation, which can then be inhaled. Of course, between dripping, coils and tanks, it can be a little more complicated once you delve beneath the surface.
In the greater scheme of life, atomisation is the process of turning a liquid into a spray – from household cleaning products, to perfumes and spray bottles, atomizers are everywhere. In the world of e-cigs, the atomizer is the device that uses power from the battery to heat a small coil that evaporates the surrounding e-liquid into a vapour.
A coil is the key component of an atomizer and contains a substance referred to as ‘polyfill’, which absorbs e-liquid from the tank of the e-cigarette through a small submerged wick. The polyfill itself comes into direct contact with a red-hot filament inside the coil and a vapour is produced that can then be inhaled. The coil itself has a shelf life of between 1-2 weeks, as the polyfill loses its absorbency (depending on usage) and needs to be replaced. Luckily, they are very cheap and easy to change out.
A good-quality atomizer will last several years without showing a decrease in performance as long as it is used alongside good quality e-liquids; and as long as the coil is changed regularly, the atomizer should continue to perform as well as it did when it was new.
