Everything You Need To Know About Different Vaping Styles - MTL, RDTL & DTL Vaping
If you're new to vaping, you may not fully understand what different vaping styles there are as when you start out, you're only going to be interested in mouth to lung vaping, especially if you're quitting smoking and starting to vape!
Alongside mouth to lung vaping, there's also direct to lung vaping and more recently, restricted direct to lung vaping has started to gain in popularity, especially when using a refillable pod vape kit. In this blog, we're going to explore all of the different vaping styles and explain all you need to know including what vape coils you need, what vape juice to use as well as some of our top vape kit recommendations to ensure you have a satisfying vaping experience with whichever style you choose!
mtl vaping explained
Mouth To Lung or MTL as it's abbreviated to is the most common style of vaping and it's what many vapers lean towards when it comes to vaping style preference. This style of vaping mimics the effects of smoking a cigarette in the way the vapour from your e-cigarette is inhaled in the way it's inhaled and then the vapour hits the back of the throat before a short pause and finally exhaling the vapour.
This style of vaping doesn't require a lot of power from your vape device, so a low wattage output is common with MTL vaping, which in turn uses less e-liquid over time which is another benefit of MTL vaping that many vapers prefer. We explain more about what vape juice you need to use for MTL vaping a little further on in this blog.
dtl vaping explained
The other common style of vaping which many vapers enjoy is DTL vaping, or to give it's full name term; Direct To Lung. This style of vaping is exactly as it sounds, the vapour from your e-cigarette is inhaled directly down to the lung and then exhaled, with little to no throat hit effect as you're not holding the vapour in.
DTL vaping is also classed as "sub-ohm vaping" because it's commonly done by using a higher powered vape kit as well as a coil that has a lower ohms resistance, hence the term sub-ohm. Vapers enjoy this style of vaping as it produces thicker plumes of vape cloud as well as boosted flavour from the e-liquid used and this is part of the reason why people prefer DTL vaping.
This is a natural progression from mouth to lung vaping as once you've started lowering down your nicotine strength in your e-liquid, you may find you're not seeking that like for like experience that MTL vaping gives so you can consider upgrading to a bigger sub ohm vape kit and experience DTL vaping for yourself!
rdtl vaping explained
RDTL stands for restricted direct to lung and it's become a popular vaping style with vapers who tend to prefer using a pod vape kit. It's similar to a standard direct to lung hit, but instead of an open wide airflow, it's restricted by closing off x amount of the air holes to then making it a slightly tighter draw but still able to produce thick clouds of vapour as well as heightened flavour from the e-liquid used.
RDTL vaping doesn't require as higher wattage settings unlike what traditional DTL vaping does which is why it's able to be done with a pod vape kit that can run at a mid range wattage setting. The coil used normally isn't as low ohms resistance as what's used for proper direct to lung vaping, therefore it helps preserve e-liquid by not heating up and burning through it quickly like what a sub ohm vape kit does for example.
what coils to use for each vaping style
It's important to have the correct coil for the style of vaping which you want to do. We'll explain what coils you need to consider using when choosing your vaping style as if you're using the wrong coil, then chances are you're not going to have a pleasurable vaping experience!
mouth to lung (MTL) vaping
As we mentioned at the top of this blog, mouth to lung vaping doesn't require your vape kit to be run at higher wattages so you're going to need a higher ohms resistance coil to ensure you have a good MTL style vape experience. We'd advise choosing a coil with an ohms resistance of 1.0ohm or higher. This resistance normally only requires 12-15 watts of power from your battery to provide a punchy throat hit when you inhale alongside a subtle amount of vapour. The general rule of thumb is the higher the ohms of the coil, the lower the wattage output of your vape device.
direct to lung (DTL) vaping
For the most optimal DTL vape experience, you're going to want to choose a vape coil that has an ohms resistance of at least 0.4ohms or lower. These can be ramped up with higher wattage output on a vape kit to provide a good thick cloud of vapour alongside heightened flavour.
And this is the reverse of the above where the lower the ohms resistance of the coil means the higher wattage can be run on your vape device.
restricted direct to lung (RDTL) vaping
This is essentially the middle of the road when it comes to vaping styles as it's inbetween MTL and DTL vaping, so you're going to want to choose a coil that has an ohms resistance between the ones we've mentioned above.
We've found that coils rated around 0.6-0.8ohm can perform well to provide a smooth and satisfying RDTL vape experience. A high wattage is not required for these coils and you'll want to aim around 18-25 watts and don't forget to restrict your airflow on your vape kit!
what vape juice to use for each vaping style
Coils aren't going to last you forever and eventually they are going to reach the end of their lifespan, but there are a few tips and tricks which we will list below that you can follow to help and ensure that you get the maximum use out of your vape coil before you need to change it.

If you're looking to use a higher ohm coil for an MTL style vape experience, the best e-liquid to use is any mixed at a 50%VG to 50%PG ratio. With a balanced base mix, the PG content helps create a stronger throat hit alongside the tighter draw from the MTL vape coil.
We'd recommend trying EDGE Core or EDGE Nic Salts with any coil rated 1.0ohm or higher.

And if you're looking for those big clouds and even bigger flavour using a DTL vape coil for sub ohm vaping, you're going to need to pair these coils with a High VG e-liquid. By this, we mean a vape juice that has a higher VG content compared to the PG content, such as 80%VG to 20%PG. This e-liquid will be thicker and require higher temperatures to be heated up and turned into vapour which is exactly what a low ohms resistance coil is designed for! |
Try any of our great EDGE Elite High VG flavours or our EDGE Max range, which is designed for sub ohm vapers to provide big flavour with every puff!
