Why Is My Vape Device Leaking?

If you've been vaping for a while, there's a strong possibility that you would have experienced a leaking vape tank or vape pod that's used with your vape device. When this does happen, it's frustrating and can be very messy especially if you have a full pod or tank before it started leaking!

In this blog, we're going to aim to troubleshoot as to why your vape device may be leaking and how to prevent these issues from arising in the future!

You May Not Be Filling Your Vape Pod/Tank Correctly

Most vape tanks or vape pods will have a maximum fill line which will be indicated either on the vape coil or the outer of either your vape tank or vape pod. It's crucial to ensure you do not go over this line when filling up your vape pod or vape tank.

If you do, this will cause it to become overfilled and then the only thing the excess vape juice can do is leak from your vape pod or vape coil.

Check Your Coil Is Installed Properly

All vape tanks will use replacement coils and these are normally installed by screwing them into the base of the vape tank itself and then the protective glass and top cap is put back on to form the complete vape tank. And if you're using a vape pod that utilises replacement vape coils, the most common replacing mechanism with these are push fit, where they just slide into the vape pod through the base of the pod and pull out when they require changing.

If you've recently changed your vape coil, ensure that you have correctly installed it because if it's loose, it will not have created a seal and this can lead to your vape juice leaking out through the gaps in either your vape pod or vape tank.

Ensure You're Using The Right E-Liquid

One of the most common reasons why people experience leakage from their vape device is that the e-liquid being used in the tank or pod isn't the right one for the ohms resistance of the coil. For example, higher ohm coils require a 50/50 e-liquid to be used, as these coils are for mouth to lung vaping and do not require a high amount of wattage to heat up properly to then turn the e-liquid to vapour.

And on the flipside of that, lower ohms resistance coils require thicker e-liquid such as High VG 80/20 e-liquid to be used with them as these coils require a higher wattage setting to ramp up faster to optimal temperatures to then heat the e-liquid up to turn into those thick clouds of vapour people enjoy to chase.

If you use the wrong e-liquid with the wrong coil, then it's just going to leak out. Thicker e-liquid with a high ohms vape coil means it won't be heated up properly to be turned to vapour, and the excess e-liquid is going to leak out from your airflow because the coil is becoming flooded. And if you use a thinner consistency e-liquid with a lower ohm vape coil, it's just going to seep through the cotton rather than be absorbed and naturally, will leak from your vape tank or vape pod.

Your Vape Coil May Need Changing

Arguably the most common reason why your vape device is leaking comes down to the condition of your vape coil itself.

If you've had the coil in for a while, naturally over time the cotton wick of the coil will begin burning/degrading away and once this starts happening, this means that your e-liquid has nowhere to soak into and will instead begin leaking out from your vape tank or vape pod. If this happens, then maybe it's time to change your vape coil for a fresh one and you should see the leakage stop happening from there.

Check All Seals Are Tight and not damaged

As we mentioned above, when putting a coil in a vape tank, they require being screwed into the base of the vape tank. When installing a coil like this, you must take care as to not damage the threads on both the vape coil as well as the vape tank and also ensure that you do not cross threaded it as either of those things happening will cause your vape tank to leak vape juice as the seals will not be tight and secure.

There are also other seals around your vape tank, normally secured by a small rubber ring which acts as the seal. These can begin erroding over time, so keep a close eye on the conditions of these seals too as this could be a reason why your vape tank is leaking.
