Why is Self-Care Important and How Can It Help You?

Self-Care:

“The actions that individuals take for themselves, on behalf of and with others in order to develop, protect, maintain and improve their health, wellbeing or wellness”

Self-care is a simple concept, but its importance is often undermined. Self-care encompasses anything that you do to be good to yourself, having self-compassion and taking some well deserved me-time.  Practicing self-care is crucial for our physical, emotional and mental wellbeing and it has the power to enhance our overall quality of life.

Improve physical health

By practising self-care, you are treating yourself like you matter – with this follows fewer cases of illness. Most self-care activities activate your parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) meaning your body goes into a restful, rejuvenating mode, helping it to strengthen its immune system. Improved physical ability also means an easier time in the gym, physical exercise can boost your mood, reducing stress and anxiety.

Increased Positivity

Self-care can encourage feelings of positivity, which in turn helps boost your self-confidence. By remembering your intrinsic value, you enhance your self-esteem and discourage negative self-talk and your critical inner voice.

Positive minds are powerful minds. Pessimism can hold us back and making us less likely to reach our goals and achieve success.  A positive mindset allows us to feel motivated, determined and to make better progress in our work life or personal life . Optimism is important because every single thought and decision we make, creates and impact and influences our lives. Positive thinking is very beneficial for our mental health, it eliminates any form of paranoia and negative thoughts that can cause depression and stress.

Strengthen Relationships

Whether your self-care routine includes spending more time with your family, friends or canine companion, it’s a fantastic opportunity to build your relationships. Pets provide unconditional love and provide companionship. Dogs can help reduce stress and feeling of anxiety, as well as lower blood pressure. By investing your self-care time in being around others, you can feel gradually more supported by the people around you and feel overall, more content.

No matter which way you choose to incorporate self-care into your life, whether it be ensuring you get eight hours sleep, joining a yoga class or quitting smoking, remember you are the most important person in your life. Take back control of your life and live for you!
