Vaping in Mexico - Can You Vape While in Mexico?
Mexico is one of the most popular tourist destinations for UK holidaymakers, offering escapism, beautiful culture, delicious food, wonders of the world and of course, that all-important sunny weather, but what are the rules for vapers?
If you are planning a trip to Mexico as a vaper, then there are some important things to be aware of, and you might not be thrilled with how the nation handles its vaping restrictions.
European nations are, by and large, very tolerant of vaping and in many cases welcoming of it, with minimal restrictions on bringing vaping devices and e-liquids into and out of different countries, and plenty of local options for staying topped up once you arrive. The wider world, however, is not so welcoming, and Mexico unfortunately falls into this camp.
You can explore more about the latest rules in other countries on other blogs on our website - read on to learn more about vaping in Mexico.
Is It Legal To Vape In Mexico?
As of 2026, Mexico's vaping regulations have become much more strict, with a complete blanket ban on the sale and import of vape kits. This means that vape kits cannot be brought into Mexico and will be seized in customs. If found with a vape kit in Mexico, you risk fines or possibly even jail time.
In February 2022, Mexico’s general law on tobacco reform was amended to regulate 100% smoke free areas and totally banned tobacco advertisement. In addition, in April 2022, the Union Congress approved a new General Import and Export Tax Law to prohibit the import and export of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products.
In other words, importing your own vape device or e-liquid is completely off the table. If you're found trying in spite of this, it will result in seizure of the items by customs, and you could face a fine upwards of $3000. In worse cases, you could be detained as bringing them in is tantamount to smuggling.
When visiting in the past, you could possibly purchase vaping supplies form a local retailer, but there was no clarity on which businesses are lawfully run and what could get you in trouble. We recommended against this in the past regardless. Now, due to a much more heavy-handed approach from the Mexican government, there's very little chance you'll find a vape supplier operating in Mexico.
We would absolutely advise against visiting the few that may remain, as they're operating illegally. Being caught purchasing from them will land you in serious legal trouble. This may take the form of a fine, or in worst cases, arrest.

Can I Bring Disposable Vapes to Mexico?
No, the import and sale of disposable vapes is treated with the same standards applied to e-liquid and refillable vape kits. We would absolutely advise against bringing disposable vapes into Mexico, as they will almost certainly be removed and legal action can be enforced.
Vape Regulations in Mexico
Due to the general ban on the sale and distribution of vaping products in Mexico, there do not appear to be any regulations for their manufacture. This means that even if you are able to find a vape retailer out there, there's no way of knowing if they are tested for quality and safety.
They will most likely follow similar rules to the USA, with no cap on nicotine strength, but this cannot be used as a true reference, as Mexico’s lawmakers have not specified and restrictions on ingredients or safety caps on e-liquid content or nicotine strength.
The safest bet is to avoid vaping in Mexico unless you feel you are certain of a products credibility.
Where Can You Vape in Mexico?
Mexico has enforced clean air zones across the country, which means even if you somehow find a vape to use once you land, you must be very careful about where you start puffing.
Use of vapes isn't necessarily illegal, but even still, we would advise against vaping in Mexico as this brings into question how you managed to find a vape in the first place, especially if you're travelling.
Resort areas have been known to be more lax in the past with regulations, but with how much the government has pressed down on vaping, we'd suggest exercising heavy caution.
Can You Buy Vapes in Mexico?
No, while in the recent past there was a legal grey area on buying vapes in Mexico, this has been clearly addressed in the 2026 Health Reform. If you do manage to find a retailer or seller of vapes or vaping-related products, we would suggest avoiding them as they're operating illegally, and purchasing can lead to legal trouble.
